Pershing was driven and determined, so when he obtained a few successes in the October 4 attack, it was only natural that he would order another general offensive as soon as possible, which turned out to be October 14. For this, he sought to bring in his remaining veteran divisions. This turned out to be only the 42nd, which replaced the 1st on the night of October 11â12. The 2nd Division was fighting under French command to the west of the Argonne in the Champagne, taking Mont Blanc with heavy casualties, and it could not arrive in time.
The plan for October 14 was as ambitious as the one ten days earlier, and again, it achieved only a small part of what Pershing hopedâthis time, a single success by the 42nd Division. In the earlier attack, the commander in chief had planned on a pincer movement by the 42nd and the 5th to take the Côte Dame Marie, but the 32nd had given him Dame Marie unexpectedly. The plan for the fourteenth involved much more. This time, the 42nd and the 5th were to force the enemy out of Dame Marie by penetrating the Kriemhilde Stellung at its center. Then, the two divisions were to push north to the third portion of the Hindenburg Line on the Barricourt heights. Beyond the heights, the Meuse-Argonne was open country to the river. In the event, the pincer was unnecessary, and it would not have worked anyway, because the 5th Division was unable to move forward. The 42nd stalled until the divisionâs 84th Brigade broke through the Kriemhilde Stellung at Côte de Châtillon, after which, exhausted, it could go no farther.
